El Paso is the only Texas city that can boast a mountain in the middle — and all the real adventure that can mean. With 315 days of sunshine a year, you can live a Hemingway novel here in about a week. If it’s relaxation you’re after, you can enjoy our sunshine basking by a pool or challenging the 72-par wonderland of Butterfield Trail, a breathtaking, Tom Fazio–designed golf course.
In El Paso, the panoramic great outdoors is part of everyday life, but you don’t have to be a hiker, biker, climber, skier or runner to enjoy the soul of the city. There’s plenty more to do. If you’re a foodie, start with the Mexican flavors. Every morning here, bakeries still turn out fresh Mexican pastries exactly the same way they did a century ago. Generations of families share their best enchiladas, tacos, tamales, salsas — an entire universe of Mexican food — in hundreds of restaurants all over town. Here, heritage is a living treasure.
El Pasoans revere and still use some of the oldest missions in the nation, and visiting them is not a velvet-rope experience. You might feel the crackle of last night’s bridal rice underfoot or hear children singing as you visit the Ysleta and Socorro missions and San Elizario Chapel — all built in the 1600-1700s.
Downtown El Paso holds some urban treasures. The Union Plaza District comes alive at night with music that keeps crowds dancing till the wee hours. Also Downtown: The Plaza Theatre. Saved from demolition, this 1930s motion picture palace has been restored right down to the brocade cushions in the ladies’ lounge. The Plaza’s stage is always lit up for traveling Broadway shows and concerts. Every August, it presents the world’s largest classic film festival. Minutes away, just over the New Mexico border, is Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, a glittering nightspot with gaming, slot machines and wagering — and horse races during the day.
If you need a dose of fresh air, it’s never far away. El Paso has 37 square miles of protected wilderness on its western mountain slopes: Franklin Mountains State Park. With some of the toughest bike trails in the U.S., it’s also great for a short, quiet hike. Day trips can take you to Carlsbad Caverns, waterskiing in Southern New Mexico lakes, and to intriguing petroglyphs and rock formations at Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site. It’s a popular adventure destination for expert climbers and boulderers from all over the U.S. and Europe.
